Winter Driving to the Port
In winter, snow and ice can slow the drive to the Anchorage port, especially on the Parks Highway from Fairbanks. If you are dropping the car off yourself between November and March, leave extra time.
The Washington Bridge Work
The westbound Washington Bridge on I-195 between East Providence and Providence was closed in late 2023 and is being rebuilt. Traffic in both directions shares the other span, so backups there are common.
Tip: Ship the Car Empty
Ships and barges have their own rules. Alaska Marine Lines, for example, doesn't allow items in the front seat, and it insures personal items for only 10 cents a pound. Ship the car empty unless your carrier agrees in advance to carry personal items.
Tip: Register Within 30 Days in Rhode Island
Rhode Island gives new residents 30 days to get a new title and registration. The car needs a VIN check first, since it is coming from another state, and your insurance must come from a company licensed in Rhode Island. After you register, you have 5 days to get the car inspected.
