Winter Driving to the Port
In winter, snow and ice can slow the drive to the Anchorage port, especially on the Parks Highway from Fairbanks. If you are dropping the car off yourself between November and March, leave extra time.
Hampton Roads Tunnels
Getting around Hampton Roads means crossing the water on a bridge-tunnel, such as the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on I-64 or the Monitor-Merrimac on I-664. Traffic often backs up at the tunnels, and the I-64 crossing is in the middle of a big expansion.
Tip: Pick an Easy Delivery Spot
Many Norfolk and Virginia Beach streets are too narrow or crowded for a 75-foot car carrier. A large parking lot near I-64 or I-264 is often the easiest place to meet the driver.
Tip: Title and Register Within 30 Days
Virginia gives new residents 30 days to title and register their cars at a DMV customer service center, and you need insurance first. The car must pass a Virginia safety inspection, and cars kept in Northern Virginia need an emissions test before registering.
